My grandfather preached in German. He'd come to the country as a boy, and as an adult, he was the minister of a tiny Methodist church in the Northern corner of Park Slope. He did what he could to make his family's lives better, departing eventually for the burbs, getting his son a scholarship to school. His son raised me, and as an adult, I moved back to that same neighborhood, within a few blocks of that same church, where my grandfather had first made his way as an adult.
